Fives

The Observers. The Researchers. The Introspectors. Fives are very private and reclusive personalities as they perceive the outside world as threatening and feel safe being by themselves. They retreat into their mental world where they draw strength and recharge their batteries. Moving around in the hustle and bustle, among crowds of people is downright physically exhausting for the highly sensitive Fives. They try not to attract attention so that others aren’t tempted to engage them in conversation or even ask personal questions. Such advances can cause severe anxiety in Fives because the other person is perceived as an intruder. Small talk is also highly frustrating and tiring to them and seems like nothing but a waste of time. The reclusiveness of most Fives stems from having grown up in families that consisted of many or very dominant people by whom they felt overrun by and thus rarely found time for themselves. Rarer cases are Fives who grew up in a household lacking warmth and hardly knew any physical closeness. For this reason, Fives have learned to make themselves invisible by slipping into the silent observer role. In doing so, nothing escapes them as they are equipped with an eagle eye and a razor-sharp mind. Constantly oriented around expanding their knowledge autonomously, information sources like books are their most trusted friends. Fives feel great happiness surrounded by their own modest four walls with piles of reading material, where they dive quietly into worlds that are in no way accessible to others. Like Alice, they slip down the rabbit hole into their wonderland and go on a journey of discovery. Fives are experts and specialists in the fields that fascinates them. Often these are mysteries in the natural sciences and humanities, and the Fives’s aim is to peer far beyond what has been studied thus far and to explore something that has yet to be discovered. They do not stop until they have illuminated every hidden nook and cranny, because everything they do not know or understand seems like a big black hole that threatens to devour them. They fill this hole with knowledge in order to secure a place in this world in which they would otherwise feel threatened of perishing. The danger of this greed for knowledge is that Fives easily get lost in their worlds and become more and more distant from their fellow human beings and the real world. In extreme cases, fanaticism cannot be ruled out. In all this, they often forget the necessities of life. Fives tend to be stingy with sharing their knowledge with others and with material things for themselves. They feel most comfortable in a minimalist autonomous existence. "Since I don't need anything, I am independent and do not owe anybody anything, so no one can demand anything from me. I am left alone," is the strategy of Fives to secure their privacy. Emotional people who show more interest in their personal lives than in their research seem particularly suspicious to Fives. Human warmth combined with attempted physical contact makes Fives recoil and react with suspicion. "What does this person want from me?" is their first thought. Fives are therefore often perceived as dismissive, cold and arrogant. Since the rejected people also withdraw, an almost insurmountable gorge often opens up between Fives and the rest of the world. Conquering the heart of Fives therefore requires a lot of patience to slowly build up their trust, as their own subtle feelings are often overwhelming and which Fives find difficult to discern. For this reason, they are only able to perceive emotions with a time delay when they are alone and when they have their peace and quiet to process everything.
Like a sponge, Fives soak up impressions and store every detail, whereby the complex interrelationships only become tangible and decipherable after they delimit, structure and order the abundance of information. Putting together many pieces of a puzzle and recognising greater connections and analogies then fills Fives with deep confidence and felicity. The lack of mental complexity of others frustrates Fives immensely, and therefore they retreat more and more into their shell, becoming painfully aware of their isolation, as they often see no way to break out of this vicious circle. For this reason, it is not unusual for Fives to study the human psyche and be fascinated, for example, by how multifaceted the Enneagram is. Oftentimes they bring themselves closer to humans by understanding the different personality structures.

It is essential for Fives to realise that, in addition to mental intelligence, there are also physical and emotional intelligences that are just as valuable and that they can, in fact learn a lot from other people in those areas. If Fives manage to act out of their observations and take a step towards people, feel empathy and show sincere sympathy, they will find a more direct access to their own feelings and thus build a bridge to the real world. Another challenge for Fives is to root themselves in their bodies and learn to intuitively move into action at the right moment. They will feel a sense of deep connection, meaningfulness and security when they share their valuable knowledge with the world and take humanity one step further in its evolution.
